AN INTRO TO READING THE BIBLE (Hermeneutics)

Dates: July 6 - August 10

Professor Gerard Cruz

Room D1

Biblical Education

Do you ever read the Bible, and wonder ... "What does this passage mean?" Isn't it time to learn how to better understand the Word of God?

Uncovering the meaning of a text is important if we are to apply Scripture accurately. This class will offer some guidelines for study and interpretation.
Some of the topics include an overview of different translations and reference works, as well as an introduction to the various types of literature in the Old and New Testaments. When you take this class, you’ll become familiar with the most common literary genres found in the Bible; use the best reading strategy suited for a particular genre; and, learn to read the Bible for personal enjoyment.

An Intro to Reading the Bible” includes these topics:

    •  The Bible As Literature (engaging imagination)
    •  Narrative (The Bible’s plot, characters, setting)
    •  Poetry (the richness of images & comparisons)
    •  Parables (simple stories with profound meaning)
    •  Prophecy (messages of judgment & salvation)
    •  Apocalypse (God’s judgment upon evil)
